k6 2.0 Launches with AI-Powered Testing and Browser Automation Upgrades
Breaking: k6 2.0 Now Generally Available
Grafana Labs today announced the general availability of k6 2.0, the latest major update to the open-source performance testing tool. The release introduces AI-assisted testing workflows, expanded Playwright compatibility, and a new Assertions API, aiming to accelerate software delivery lifecycles.
“This is a pivotal release that brings AI agents directly into the testing loop,” said Maria Chen, Senior Product Manager at Grafana. “Teams can now write, validate, and iterate performance tests faster than ever, while maintaining the reliability and scale k6 is known for.”
AI-Assisted Workflows for Faster Testing
k6 2.0 includes four new CLI commands designed to integrate with AI coding assistants and agentic workflows. The k6 x agent command bootstraps test generation in tools like Claude Code and Cursor, automatically configuring skills and references.
“Agents can turn plain-language requirements into robust k6 test scripts using these commands,” Chen explained. The k6 x mcp command exposes k6 via a Model Context Protocol server, while k6 x docs and k6 x explore provide CLI access to documentation and the extension registry.
“We're seeing a paradigm shift where tests must be authored and interpreted by both humans and AI,” said James Park, Grafana Engineer. “k6 2.0 ensures agents can write idiomatic, correct tests without leaving the terminal.”
Playwright Compatibility and Assertions API
The browser module now offers broader compatibility with Playwright, allowing performance tests to run against real browser interactions. A new Assertions API lets developers express expectations more clearly and catch regressions earlier.
“The Assertions API makes it easier to validate complex conditions in load tests,” Park added. “Combined with Playwright support, teams can simulate realistic user flows under load.”
Background: From Open Source to Production Standard
k6 first gained popularity as an open-source load testing tool, amassing over 30,000 stars on GitHub. Version 1.0, released last year, brought TypeScript support, native extensions, and production-grade stability.
“k6 has always helped teams shift performance testing left,” Chen noted. “k6 2.0 continues that mission with AI and automation at the forefront.”
What This Means for Developers and DevOps Teams
With AI-assisted commands, developers can generate test scripts directly from requirements, reducing manual effort. The new features also streamline integration into CI/CD pipelines, enabling continuous performance validation.
“This release lowers the barrier for teams to adopt performance testing,” Park said. “Agents can now autonomously run and refine tests, freeing engineers to focus on higher-level quality decisions.”
Despite the new capabilities, existing scripts and workflows—including checks, thresholds, scenarios, and CI/CD—remain fully supported, ensuring a smooth upgrade path.
